Was the battery fully charged before you fitted it?

Think i would get the alternator checked if the battery was charged before fitting.

Are you certain the battery is at fault here, it could be a problem with loose or dirty connections at the starter or earth connections on the engine/chassis or might even be the starter itself. The power steering takes its supply directly from the alternator so only works when the engine is running. If you had no power steering when the engine was running its likely you have a faulty alternator

i'd check the charging voltage when running ( should be between 12.8 and 14V ) to confirm the alternator is running okay...if it's making voltage, then it's fine..

it could be a direct short to earth ( faulty diode pack in alternator) or the like that is dischargeing the battery..Also, do a drop test on the battery with the multimeter..it shouldn't dip below 10.5V when trying to start it...and static cold, the battery should have 12.3-12.5V in it.. any less indicates either a bad cell in the battery or a slow overnight discharge..
