Default Wheel balancing - a common problem?

Not quite what the thread title says.......

Having had trouble balancing my new Uniroyals, I thought I'd be anal today and weigh all the wheel bolts.

    Normal wheel bolt = 65-67gm

VX locking wheel bolt = 89gm

So the "common problem" is the locking wheel bolts as we all have them.

Now I appreciate that wheel bolts are closer to the centre of rotation than the outside of the rim where the balance weights are fitted but surely a diffrence of 24gm with the wheel and bolts re-fitted is bound to throw the balance out.

Solution - get the wheels balanced on the car but trying to find a garage that still does this is proving difficult.

Maybe I'm been too techy - perhaps someone wiser can clarify?

Might be worth checking that the heaviest part of the tyre is opposite the valve..... (I hope I got this right (isn't that what the red dot is on the tyre?).

I had this on an aftermarket set of alloys, one wheel needed loads of weight to get the balancing anywhere near, in the end, rotating the tyre on the rim and a rebalance sorted the problem.

Wheel balancing is about the inconsistency in the tyre when fitted to the wheel, plus any damage, imperfections and so on in the wheel itself

Remove the locking wheel bolts from both from wheels and compare
Instead of +22g you now have -135g

As modern cars get more and more complex suspension designs what would not previously have affected a car may do so now, and wheel balancing is one of those

just for the sake of testing why not take the locking wheel bolt off your front wheels and replace it with a standard bolt from the rear wheels, that way you'll know for sure whether the locking wheel bolt is definitely causing the problem.

Hi Harry - just come back from Tescos and I was thinking the very same . Thought for a minute you had an "on car" balancing machine LOL.

ps. sorry but can't make the 7th at your place - enjoy.

You say you are having trouble and I had the same with new tyres. It went back 3 times until I was happy.

Just had an idea which I'll try over the weekend.........

Going to remove each of the four plastic covers on each front wheel and add 24gm of lead to each. Each of the ordinary bolts should then all be the same as the locking one .

Is this totally anal or what?

I very much doubt a difference of 24g near the centre will make much difference otherwise they would make them to be equal weights. Try pushing a door near the hinges and you will get what I mean.

I would say that if you are still experiencing unbalance of your road wheels (i.e. you can feel it through the steering wheel) then the wheels are not balanced, full stop.

Like others have done, they're either right or there not, get it back to where you had them done in the first place.
