need a little help the mrs wants a good one for xmas its for taking to africa next year and shes talking about 18x zoom think thats optical but not sure any advice greatly appreciated

What's the budget?

A long zoom is good but remember you need a steady hand/truck. A tripod or monopod may be useful.

This looks good if you don't want to go to the next step of DSLR and a selection of big expensive lenses. I had the FZ-7 which, at the time, was the top notch one and was very impressed. 18x zoom is exactly that, 18x the widest setting - not 18x life size.
