    Default Buying a Nikon D40

Right guys, for the photographers amongst us, I've been thinking about upgrading to a DSLR for a while now and I've done my research and settled for a Nikon D40.

My pay increase from April just came through! and its enough to buy one so getting it tomorrow, Tuesday 25th.

Now, I'm wanting to start taking my photography a little more seriously and as I've only ever used a compact digi camera before, I wondering if I need to get some further info when I buy the D40.

As an example, there is a 'D40 for Dummies' book and I just wanted to ask on here if you think its worth getting it or anything else or if the camera manual will be sufficient.

As a bit of info, my knowledge on taking pics is 'point and click'

    Cheers
    Jus

exactly the same camera i got a couple of weeks ago, i find its a great starter dslr
read through the manual, it has loads of things about all the different settings, and maybe have a look on some of the dslr forums, they seem to be quite friendly and give out some good advice
and the best tip to start with that has been given to me many time:
play with the camera and settings, at the end of the day you just delete the crap pics so you dont lose out
    have fun

If you haven't come across Ken Rockwell yet, have a look at his site. Highly opinionated and somewhat tongue in cheek, but lots of useful info:
    http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40.htm

The 'Nikonians' site is also a mine of information on Nikon cameras:
    http://www.nikonians.org/

    Enjoy the camera

    Thumbs up

Hi Jus - fellow Nikon DSLR owner here, had a D70 since 2004 and considering upgrading to a D90. Previously had a point and shoot too.

you don't say what kind of subjects you want to photograph ( I prefer motorsports), but in my opinion, you don't need any books, you need your camera, a lens, a fully charged battery, a memory card and........ your eyes!

Just practice, practice practice. you can shoot on a D40 fully automatically - point and click - to begin with, then read the manual and experiment with the various settings. See what difference setting the ISO, Exposure, White Balance, Aperture etc makes to your photo's by experimenting. At the end of the day, if it is no good, just delete it and try again! the Nikon manual is pretty good, and there is a wealth of info online too.

A D40 will take 500+ shots from a fully charged battery and it is instant in startup and when you push the shutter button, so you should have great fun.

You don't need expensive gear to make great photo's either, I played for a long time with a £30 second hand 300mm lens on my D70 and whilst the photos were in my opinion too soft and the focus was slightly out, I learned loads about how to shoot action shots, blurring backgrounds, depth of field etc, by experimenting. I've only lately bought a new 70-300mm VR lens.

If you really want to understand some theory about photography then by all means buy a book, there are hundreds out there, or look up online and save money - i.e. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aperture .

    importantly - have fun!!

Thanks for all the help and advice guys, much appreciated.

To answer your question Jaffa, I quite like scenery shots and motorsport/car pics. Great pics by the way.

Guess I'll get practicing and I'll definitely check out some of the forums and links you've suggested.

    Hi,

I know it is all each to his own and all that but just wondering what was it that swung you to choosing the Nikon D40 over anything else (canon).

I'm very intersted in getting a new DSLR as i've just got rid of my 35mm SLR (Canon EOS300). I've always swayed more to Canon in the past but am open minded and interested in what other people have to say and why.

This is one of those questions, what came first the chicken or the egg.they are both excellent camera makes and every-one(photography wise) has opionions on why theirs is best.I personelly use a Nikon d300 and also have a Sony A350(great camera for the price)and various lens.best bet would be go and try each one and see which feels right for you
