Default Jus bought a new car ........

........... well for my wee sister actually

its a Corsa Sxi+, 1.2 twinport. same spec as Sxi but with half leather seats and tinted windows aswell. brand new delivery mileage, £7.5k with protection pack (mudguards etc), mats, 2 free services, petrol, road tax etc.

I'm curious, what does Twin port mean, the sales guys said it was a more efficient engine.

Twin port is, iirc, an emissions thing. It helps keep the levels down - unfortunately it also zaps a bit of power! I think!

I thought twinport was the type of engine, something similar to Variable Value Timing

I thought it was meant to boost power, by creating more swirl and all that? Or like a kind of less complex v-tec thing where it boosted torque at low revs and made more power at high revs.

Here we go from http://www.gmsa.com/archivesdetail.jhtml?id=54 guess it's the same for all the over engines in the range that now use Twinport.

OPEL's NEW TWINPORT ENGINE TECHNOLOGY FOR NEW ASTRA

Opel’s exciting new Astra features the latest in engine technology form the German manufacturer for improved engine efficiency. Called “Twinport” by Opel, this latest development is used for the first time in the ECOTEC 1.6 litre engine.

At the heart of the Twinport technology is intelligent variable valve timing and a high proportion of exhaust gas recirculation. By varying the timing of the inlet camshaft and recirculating exhaust gasses, Opel engineers achieved a six percent fuel saving over the previous generation ECOTEc engine. Detailed work by Opel’s powertrain engineering team achieved a further one percent reduction in fuel consumption.

This highly efficient engine design fully meets the strict Euro 4 emission standard in addition to offering a substantial improvement in fuel economy. “Opel’s new ‘Twinport’ technology will offer our customers an intelligent and very user friendly boost to fuel economy when it arrives in South Africa in the new Opel Astra,” says Malcolm Gauld, GMSA’s Sales and Marketing Director. “Twinport is typical of Opel’s new approach to vehicle design as the company strives to offer advanced technology that benefits operating efficiencies at affordable prices.”

With the Twinport system, the ECOTEC 1.6 engine receives up to 25% of its cylinder charge from previously burnt exhaust gas which is routed through a link to the exhaust manifold. By doing this induction losses under part load are significantly reduced as the engine does not have to work as hard to charge the cylinders on the intake stroke.

The advanced design of the intake ports, there are two per cylinder as the name ‘Twinport’ suggests, allows efficient combustion of a very lean mixture. Under part load one of the two ports is closed by a flap valve to ensure a high level of combustion chamber swirl and efficient mixing of the fuel/air mixture for complete and reliable combustion.

Along with the new ‘Twinport’ technology comes a host of detail changes to the engine 1.6 ECOTEC engine design. The design of the engine block has been optimised in terms of weight and vibration, and the valve gear is now smoother and has reduced friction losses. Auxiliary items such as the water pump have been relocated for easier engine assembly and enhanced overall quality in this new era engine that represents state-of-the-art technology in its class.

The new ECOTEC ‘Twinport’ engine from Opel will be seen for the first time in South Africa in the new Opel Astra which is due for launch in the near future.

    Ends.

But I'm sure it still zaps some power! It reduces emissions/increases mpg but I'm positive the power loses out.
