confused Buying a welding set - advice please

    Hi folks,
I've got myself a little kitcar project and it is need of some welding in places. So having passed a basic welding course at Uni and having read somewhere that Inverter Welders are better then your standard ARC or MIG welders (I'll happily go with someone in the knowledge here though so don't read that as me having decided in an Inverter Welder ) Can you have a look at a couple of these please? I am just after a one that will do some small jobs rather then patch up the Forth Road bridge if you catch my drift.

    Inverter Welding set 1

    Inverter Welding set 2

    Many thanks,
    Andy

the question i have to ask is what do you really WANT to weld??.. if it's just car chassis stuff and it's old metal then an inverter ( DC scratch TIG set) will just hate it..they like good clean new metal, and not too thick either at that power rating..

Arc is good on clean or rusty metal, but harsh and burns through very easily..it's main advantage over inverters and MIG is having no need for a sheilding gas supply..

if it's convinience and ease you're looking for, then buy a fan cooled MIG set..as powerful as an arc set, but as controlable as an inverter....Hence why they are so popular..gasless one's are 'okay' and basically a continual arc setup..with the sheilding gas flux being part of the core of the wire..

Having been trained in welding since my early teens i'd have to advise you to go the MIG route...

I would have to agree, gas shield MIG has to be the way forward.

Get yourself a properly regulator and an old style pub CO2 bottle. It will save you a fortune as the small CO2 cylinders don't last long and will work out far more expensive.

The first thing to make, is a trolley so you can wheel the set around with the bottle attached. You will find it invaluable, and is an easy practice for you with the new set before you attack the car.

I have done many cars up in the past that have needed lots of welding and I always used a Mig welder and always had good results.
Go for a named one ie Sip, Clarke which I had, make sure it has a non live torch otherwise you will be arking everytime your torch touches metal, and idealy no lower than 130amp and Turbo cooled as that lets you weld for longer. My mig uses gas and the argo/co2 gives a really nice neat weld, I cant comment for the No Gas models as I have never used one and also take your time as you will get a better finish.

anything over 130amp think you need to use a higher ampage socket (cooker) but i use 130 on normal sockets have a look into it before you buy just incase if thats any help

No the electric is fine, my mig is a Clarke 150 turbo and its fine and I have a friend who has a garage type mig thats a 180 turbo and normal plug/ electric again. Avoid 3 phase as its a totaly different electric supply and is commercial use only
