If your car in on vx eco flex service sched ,then the recomendation is to use 5w 30 fully synth which is supposed to last for 30 ,000 miles approx, and the service indicator will react accordingly, its permissable to also use 10w 40 semi synth if your on a shoter time span/mileage service sched...change at 10,000 0r 1 year which ever comes first, this applies to the dti engines..however the cdti engine is on a different service sched, afaik you must use 5w 30 fully synth @ 20,000mls intervals.
Vx have put the 10w 40 semi in mine for the annual service

They did the same for me, got a call today after contacting GM to ask which oil they should have used. garage said it "probably" used the correct oil, but there "must" have been a clerical error on my invoice, and asked me to go back tomorrow for free oil & filter change. Stealers, dont you just love em! Ah well, a fortnight of 1w/40 wont hurt, I will think of it as a flush!

Mine did the same to me, they noted it down as Shell Helix. I complained and they replaced it with 5W30 fully synth (I watched them too! Bet they regret putting a window from the sales area to the service area in) and I got a free 5l tub of it too to say sorry. Then again the service was probably overpriced anyway!

Check what it says in the service manual, if you are on the ecoflex service schedule it will specify 5w/30. If you take it to a stealer for a service then they should follow the service schedule. 10w/40 ( as long as it is the right spec ) will not neccesarily do any damage over 10k depending how its driven.
My complaint is that I paid for a service for my 1.8 vvt, and they used the wrong oil as specified by GM. God knows what their 10w-40 bulk oil is like, thats why I always change it myself unless I need a stamp as I did in this case. I will still change it in 6 months though..........

Was using 5w30, now switched to 10W40 as the car seem to be using far too much oil for my liking, so just experimenting at the moment just to see consumption difference, which at the moment seems better with it being a thicker oil and also bearing in mind there was an issue with some 2.2 engines somewhere between 2002 and 2004 I believe; having 'Not to specification piston rings fitted at factory' and hence high oil consumption, ****** cars who 'd have 'em!!
    Cheers Pete
