Default New car sales down 23%

I was reading a report last week about New car sales being down 23% compared to a year ago.

Yesterday (Saturday am) I was in the local stealers getting some bits for the car and I can honestly say it was completely dead.

Myself and the little fella were the only customers in there with sales staff and parts people huddled in groups around the showroom watching the valeter cleaning cars outside. The receptionist just sat staring at the phone.

I remember having to queue for up to half an hour to get parts on a Saturday morning not long ago but the place was like a ghost town.

After buying the parts we took a walk into the showroom itself to see if there was anything of any interest. Then as we left the salesman who sold me the SRi came over, apologised and said that he knew I was just browsing but his boss had told him he had to talk to me in case there was the slightest chance I was in the market for a new motor.

I asked him about the New Insignia. They have ordered just two as Demonstrators.

Definitely a buyers market at the minute.

i work for honda and so far for this production year we have to lose 20000 cars or nearly 10% of our production so we are noticing the differences

Been dead for a while, Steve. Lookers in Liverpool have been offering unheard of prices (unheard of for them!) for servicing with or without MOT. Heard some time ago that Lookers were looking to shed staff, including mechanics.

Said on the news the other day there are 1000 job losses a day. Quite scarey for some.

I work in the steel industry and the order book has fallen sharply in the last month or so. A lot of the younger ones are obviously panicking about their jobs and some have even asked me what i think is gonna happen. Truthfully i haven't got an answer for them, only wish i had. I do know this, ive worked for my present company for almost 40 years now (you get less for life i know) and i don't recall it being this bad for many many years. What's around the corner, if only we all knew eh? Let's just hope and pray things do eventually pick up but in the short term i just don't see it.

You wouldn't think so with the recent experiences I've had. Been trying to buy 'er indoors a Focus. Contacted numerous garages, no returned phone calls, no replies to e-mails. The ones that I have seen act like their car is the only one in existence. No discount off screen price and a 'take it or leave it' attitude. I just walk out laughing (and the cars are still sat gathering dust on the forecourt)

a lot of people have also realized that buying a new car is not value for money, why pay 20k when you can have a year old one with 15k on the clock for 10grand

Dead right MLC! Garages are still reluctant to give s*d all away! They're on the telly telling us how bad things are and how they're struggling BUT when they're having boom times they're very quiet for some reason? I haven't noticed any garages round here giving much away in these so called hard times.
