Default The end is nigh, Good Year Eagle F1 GSD3

I replaced two of my own tyres two weeks ago
    Good Year Eagle F1 GSD3 225/45 R17 94W XL

However, I've suffered a manufacturing defect on one I purchased previously at the beginning of the year and so decided to replace both front tyres

My local wholesaler has now run out of GSD3 tyres, completely!
I already knew they had been discontinued in October
They were willing to put two on special order for me, but there would be a premium delivery charge of £32 per tyre

After checking other prices and from the results of the tyre tests I did earlier in the year I have decided to choose :
Dunlop SP Sport Maxx 225/45 R17 94W XL MRT

The best price I can get, fully fitted, is £95 each, which is £5 less than the Good Year

Hmm, somebody said this over a year ago on the forum, yet I had no problems getting a new set a couple of weeks ago - and the Goodyear website still shows the GSD3 tyres in their current range We shall see.
Best tyres ever, they need to keep making these.

Retailers are using up existing stocks
My local supplier had to get some from another store on my most recent order, which took an extra day
Wholesalers still have them, but the main one in Scotland has now stopped stocking them as standard

The GSD3 is now being replaced by the Assymetric

I've now gone through the two sets of Dunlop Sport Maxx and Sport Maxx TT
    My recommendation is AVOID
Their road holding in dry is very good to excellent
However, their wet weather road holding is very poor to dangerous

    Their overall wear is average
On the rear they last 7500 miles
On the front they last 6500 miles
This gives a combined life of 14000 miles (0.71p per mile)

When you compare that to the Good Year GSD3 (0.94p per mile) which was capable of between 20000 and 21000 miles the cost per mile is still higher!

I have now started tests on the Good Year Eagle F1 Assymetric
Of note is that the sidewall is identical to the GSD3
The tread pattern is more defined, so much so that there are two clear water clearing channels

i have them on the front of mine, 235/40/18's. Done 6k and loads of life left on them. Don't find the handling that bad either.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

Bad news with regards to the recently introduced Assymetric
It has now been superseeded by the OptiGrip and it is expected the Assymetric will be discontinued after just 12 months of production!

ww.etyres.co.uk are still offering the F1 in that size for £99 fitted and balanced, and they come out to you and fit them at your work or home.
Had Dunlops on my last car, and like someone else said, they're OK in the dry, but crap in the wet. Personally I like Conti's, especially in the wet, and thats what I'll be putting on my Vectra when the NCT5's are worn out, even if they are £135 a corner. They're lighter than most tyres of the same size, which improves take-off, and they need very little to balance them.

The two Asymmetrics I just got are actually 225-45-17 91Y - yet Goodyear's site doesn't list that size in 91 loading, only 94. They seem much better than the very early 94Y in the same size I had on my Astra.

Shame to see the tyre going already.
