    Default Dealer Talk today

    All,

    Catch this one:-

I called at the local dealers today to get an update on the Meriva VXr situation. Whilst there I was browsing some brochures and also earwigging a conversation between a sales rep and prospective buyer of a new facelift Veccy C. The buyer asked what engines were available in the new C as he had a caravan to pull, the rep replied:- They do a 3 ltr diesel a 2.2 petrol and diesel and they do a 3.2 petrol. Couldn't believe my ears trying to sell him the 3.2 petrol and 2.2 diesel.

Sales guy at my dealer was admiring my car a few weeks ago and I was talking about the 150 and 120 engines and I remarked how the 150 was 16v and the 120 is 8v, to which he butted in and said, "Oh no, they are both 16 valve!" I said, "Oh no they ain't" He said, "they are, if you read the literature for the new Vectra it tells you" I then shot him down by telling him that they are now, but they were 8 and 16 valve respectively. These guys are leaving themselves wide open to claims through the sale of goods act and the trades descriptions act by not having a thorough knowledge of their products.

Some salesmen will try and bulls**t their way out of a sticky situation, and know that most buyers won't be as clued up as some of the people on this site, for example.

Working in the motor trade and having spent time as a salesman for BMW and MINI, I worked on the premise that if you don't know the answer, don't bulls**t, just say you don't know. Or don't mention it.

Otherwise, you just end up looking stupid if your buyer knows that you're talking rubbish. They'll respect the salesman more if he admits he doesn't know but endeavours to find out the answer.

Well that is no surprise, I have been a diesel fitter all my working life (apart from when I was a copper) ,and I'd never heard of them until I joined this forum. New technology has to be learned about before you can learn about it.
