every now and then my when on tick over or when the engine is labouring the oil light will flicker for a second or 2. and the engine sounds like a bag of hammers all the time. Think we are coming to a end now anyone any ideas.

Lets start with the obvious, have you checked the oil level?
If that is the mileage I would say it's coming to it's end as it sounds like low oil pressure or lack of oil as said above.
oil fine, this is second engine fitted at 159,000 so this engine has done a few miles
I had this on a car of mine once and it was the oil pressure and it did it more when hot and at idle. Eventually the engine went pop, Big and little ends went and rings too.
Sorry to say but I think you may have a large bill on its way soon
Usualy by the time you've got the oil light on the engine is knackered. I'd be looking for a new lump for it.
yeah why is this... oil lights are pretty pants its not a warning of oil light its a warning your lump is gonna die soon Very Soon
