three main reasons why..
1: dirty air filter /split boost hose.. so check these easy and cheap things first..
2: seized EGR valve ( £300 to renew)
3: dodgy fuel pump pressure regulator (£800+parts)...
the 3.0 isn't a 'common ' engine so most dealers don't like touching them..it's a bit too much guesswork for them..you will have to help out by doing some homework too.....
is the smoke black and thick?.. have you had the car's ECU plugged in at a dealers?
Depends on what you mean by a lot. Yes mine smokes, more so after a long run at a constant speed like on a motorway. Really noticable when you plant your foot after stopping at a junction! But normally? Sometimes, but not too bad.
yea yea sometimes its proper thick and black and you do notice it in the air behind. tried the motorway one. go to blackpool alot 4 hours on the motorway does the trick sometimes.
Nah aint had it plugged in at the dealers good idea you think?
Most things that go wrong with this engine usually throw up a code.Such things as EGR valves and high pressure pumps won't hesitate to tell you that they've had enough or aren't working as they should be.Air filter seems favourite, also make sure that you have no debris (plastic bags etc) in the air intake! And maybe buy your diesel elsewhere.
Is it visible smoke, resulting in a cloud, or opaque smoke from vehicle headlights behind you?
I was surprised by the amount of smoke mine produced on MoT, yet it must be low enough to meet the requirements!
When i took mine for the MOT i was told that the 3.0 engines are well know for failing the mot if they havent had a reasonable run just before or atleast been revered quite a lot.
On cold when accelerating hard i can full the road with black smoke (makes people back off and stop tailgating )but once the car is up to temp you only get a bit of smoke on full acceleration.
Sounds to me like the 3.0 V6 CDTI likes high mileage, keeping warm, and moderate driving
When I first got mine it was clear the previous owner was simply using it for commuting in 2 years and 10K miles, returning a very poor 20mpg and giving off moderate black smoke on cold starts
The MPG completely changed after I added the next 10K miles in just 4 months and the smoke on cold starts also disappeared
