Default What would you recommend to clean your car?

My car needs a decent clean... when the council get the road outside our house sorted :| - Theres a puddle there at the moment and all the crap tends to go all over my car

So what would you guys recommend?

Ive looked at snowfoam/sheepskin mits/waxes etc - but there's so much choice and I dont know where to start.

    Cheers

A good start would be to read through this thread - after that it's a case of how deep is your wallet?!

Steve, he said he wanted to give it a decent clean, not wreck his paintwork!

Cheers for moving thread Duncan, and thanks for the link

    Any personal recommendations?

Edit: That thread says use a sponge - I've been warned against sponges, arent they what causes the swirls in the first place?

TBH the thread was done a few years ago and times have moved on. There's a couple of things in there that could do with updating (the SRP information is incorrect for example) but the general approach is still valid.

I wouldn't use a standard sponge. A washmitt is less likely to inflict swirls marks (as mentioned by Andy) which as we found out yesterday are a ****** pain to remove.

    D. if youi want me to update Andy's post with a little more information based on what's available today (Snowfoam for example) I'm happy to do so.

There are loads of other people on here that could do it too though

Let me know if you do this update Steve... maybe a few of us could chip in with our own methods/product recommendations and come up with the Ultimate Vectra Cleaning Guide

    back to topic though...

It sounds like your car gets a bit of a battering being parked on the road, so i would definitely give it a good claying - if you're not sure what to buy then the Meguiars Quick Clay kit (or Smooth Surface Kit) is an ideal starting point.

for example - this was the wash stage of my 'winter wash' a few weeks back:

    1) rinse with pressure washer at approx 45deg angle so as not to force the dirt into the paint.
    2) washed wheels with AG Body shampoo using sponge and Megs wheel brush
    3) rinse wheels and car again
    4) 2BM wash with Duragloss 901 using Megs wash mitt
    5) Rinse
    6) Clay whole car using Meg's Clay and Quick Detailer as lube
    7) 2BM wash with Duragloss 901 using Megs wash mitt
    8) Rinse
    9) Light spray when wet with Megs Quick Detailer, then dry with Poorboys Drying Towel

A top tip that i picked up from the Autobrite day on Sunday was to break up the clay bar into a few pieces (approx 4-5) and keep them in a bucket of warm water when claying - that way the clay is always nice and supple for you

After the above you're ready to polish/seal/wax etc

I'll leave it at that for now, and let you ask any questions

OK will give it a go. I thought about doing it Top Gear style.

.....When it comes to Pressure Washers there is only one thing, and one thing only that you should bother yourself with........

    POOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE EEEEEEEEERR.

..then build up and drop the the lemon.

Turtle wax colour magic is readily available in a colour to match your car. What's more it a good £4.00 cheaper than than the oh so predicable but daddy of them all, Autoglym SRP.

However there is one fundamental flaw with this wax which will haunt you until the day you die.....

    Catastophic Durability.

    and then there's

Some say he makes Hooky T-cut in a shed by his allotment

and that he invented Silver Lightening Paint.

All we know is, ..........he's called The Soulman.

    and finally,

Snowfoam. What a load of cobblers. Quite frankly I'd rather glue an old ironing board to some roller skates and freestyle down K2 whilst watching X Factor repeats on my Ipod and whistling Dixie.

Do I still get the job?

Edit. Phatty. Ultimate guide sound good. Great idea.

Lol cheers for the advice guys,

the car is parked on the drive - but as I said the puddle outside the drive needs fixing by the damn council before I get round to anything.

Any ideas on total costs for the operation?

And how many washes will I get from each product?

    TY in advance again

i use turtle wax ice shampoo (the word shampoo still cracks me up) a decent wash mit (micro fibre) if im going to wax the car when im washing it i always put a little paraffin in the water when washing it ..... cleans off grime .... dont ask it was a tip from an old valeting place .... and another good tip is if you are using a bucket make sure and get a car washing one so as the stones dont transfer back onto the cloth and scratch your pride and joy
