Default Battery light came on this morning and...

    Alternator's ****ed. 1.9 CDTI (150).
50k miles, can't believe this has happened.
Vx want £450 to fix it, and it looks like they won't contribute anything towards it.
Anyone got a spare petrol can and a match?

Yep, there is a recall. Have a search for the info and hopefully yours will fall inside the range affected and you'll get it replaced FOC. Obviously your dealer aren't aware of the recall or 'forgot' to mention it!

£120 for a recon unit, any mechanic will replace in less than 15 mins.

Just had a call back from Vauxhall, they won't pay a thing.
I asked about the recall, and they said no - nothing on this one (January 2005 on a 54 plate).
How can I check if there is definitely an alternator recall for my car?

Sounds like my only option at this stage, there is no way in hell I'm going to pay £450 - I'd rather scrap it than have to pay that.

£450 is taking the proverbial. I think I paid £120 for an exchange unit for my Mk4 diesel Astra. The new alternator was probably better than new, they did a really good job with the recon.

I got a replacement unit for mine fitted by a local garage, sourced from a company in West Yorkshire and transported overnight.
All done and dusted for £258.00.
VX can go take a running jump in my opinion, they quoted me £530.00!!!!

Best advice mate is shop around.
