What's the difference?

I hope someone on here can help me.

I need to know the difference performance wise etc between the AMD Athalon and Sempron CPU's.

Also according to my limited knowledge, the Athalon 3400+ is socket 939 and the Sempron 754, am I correct in thinking this?

The reason I ask is I have commissioned a guy to build me a pc, and after paying him for his services he has e-mailed me stating that he is having problems sourcing an Athalon 3400+ so has offered to replace it with the equivalent Sempron.

Now it seems to me that he is just trying it on as most of the sites I have been on have the Athalon 3400+ at socket 939 and is quite a lot more expensive to buy than the Semprons, so is he just trying to replace it with a cheaper CPU to increase his profit or am I being too picky?

The Ahtlon / Socket 939 is the way to go .... its a more advanced and better performing platform then the Sempon /socket 754. The 754:s a budget platform that is ok for office and things like that ...
If youre gonna play some games socket 939 is def. better !! And its also more
future proof.

Hold out for a socket 939 processor.. It's the latest platform.. You don't want it built around an 'old technology' M/board if you agreed on the latest.

And the motherboard would be cheaper as well, trying it on I would say, imho the Athlon is the best chip around,

Did you get a written tech spec of the bloke when you comisioned it??

Also, As you have found.. there are plenty of sources of athalons.. So why's he having probs??

Might be because the comp.wizz is looking for a 3400. The 939 would be a 3200 or 3500

Yes bud I did, spec as follows:

AMD Athalon 3400+ CPU 800Mhz
nVidia nFORCE 4 chipset
nVIDIA GeForce 6100 graphics engine
1GB DDR Ram
80 GB Maxtor hard drive
Sony 16x DVD+/RW
3.5" Sony floppy drive

As you say, there seems to be a plentyful supply of the Athalon, so it can only be him trying to replace the dearer Athalon with the cheaper Sempron alternative to try and increase his profit margin.

Anyways, I have sent him an e-mail stating that I want the Athalon only, and if he is having difficulties completing the order then I would accept a refund and go somewhere else with my money, and we'll see what sort of reaction that gets!

Shouldnt be any problem getting a Athlon64 !!
I could order one and have it by the end of the week, so

have a loot at the base units on www.msccom.co.uk or www.morgancomputers.co.uk
some reasonable base unit deals on there, or just for price comparisons
