Default clutch has gone very soft

can anyone enlighten me as to what has just happened to my car.

i pulled up at some traffic lights and put my clutch in, clutch was done for 1-2 seconds when i heard a snap (sounded like plastic snapping). i didnt know what it was, no warning lights came on, the car didnt do anything. so i pulled away, and as i lifted the clutch and then changed gears the pedal felt really soft. the car didnt pull away any different and it doesnt change gear anydifferently. it just feels as though there is less force behind the clutch pedal returning it to rest position.

    has anyone had this before?

ill be doin a bit more driving later tonite, so i will be able to feel any changes a bit more.

    any help would be great.
    thanks

Purely a guess - but some part of the clutch spring come loose/broken? Can you look behind the pedal to see anything?

Sounds like the return spring has snapped. The reason the clutch still works ok is because the pressure plate fingers are acting as the return spring. You will also find that your Cruise Control won't work. Don't know what year your car is, but there is/was an issue with weak clutch return springs on the C's. If your still in warranty period they'll sort it. HTH

EDIT Duncan beat me to it

Fords used a quadrant ratchet arrangement (bit like a handbrake) to self adjust. When the teeth wore out you would hear a rapid fire of clicks as the teeth glided past each other and the pedal would hit the floor. It gave pretty much the same symptoms as Carl has, but on the Fords that was it, no more clutch. At least with the Vectra arrangement you still have a clutch, albeit that the pedal is not being returned fully.
