Remember Them. 11th Hour/11th day/11th month

We are quickly coming up to that time in the year again when we should be remembering those hero's who made the ultimate sacrifice for us all.
I know there are many serving and ex-services people on here besides myself who will remember and feel choked up with tears and emotions at this time of year. They will not be forgotten.

I was pleased to read the following story in the Mail showing the care and importance that is still placed on maintaining the graves of the many brave soldiers that did not come home.

I got rather choked up too, I suppose one could argue that you dont have to build an impressive grave to remember someone, indeed many families dont bother with graves or even a headstone these days when someone passes on. I've already stated to my own family that I dont want one when I go, simply being remembered occasionally is sufficient.

I paid for everything when my father passed away and was cremated 10yrs ago next June 28th.
He and mom share just a small headstone plaque with the usual engraved gold lettering.
Sandwell Council, want a ridiculous amount of money for it to remain there for another 10yrs (over £600) only my wife and I ever visit which we do at least once a month to put flowers on it, and are seriously thinking of not renewing it, but to bring the stone plaque and have it placed in our own garden. Does that sound mean or dis-respectful to you.?

Back OT... I've seen lots of the war memorials abroad and it never ceases to amaze me how well they are kept, but when I come to think about it there are indeed very few french ones.

If one is ever near Cambridge its worth finding the time to visit the only American War Cemetery in the UK which is located there. Most impressive. Glen Miller (band leader) name is also listed on one of the plaques of those missing.

The day and the buying of poppies etc isn't only for the WW lads, it covers everyone whose been injured or killed in conflict since 1914, the avatar's show it's well supported on this site which is top notch, but for those too young to really get what it's all about you must get a poppy because there's troops coming back from AF and Iraq with limbs missing, they need help, the government doesn't look after them like they should, but the Legion does, and this is where the poppy money goes.

Absolutely, Could not agree more, I donate a small fixed amount each month to Dunstans, which AYK do a lot for ex-personel, The Legion does do excellent work but it costs money and this is their main way of raising money to help these brave guys. TBH its one of the few causes I never mind donating to.

Great to see the Poppy on the site header, nice touch.

Not been in services myself but huge respect to all who have, and those that still do, serve our country. When standards of behaviour continue to fall take a look at our services for an understanding of respect, honour and old fashinoned values.

My Grandfathers medals hang on the wall - Italy, North Africa, bomb flashes - four years away in a war he didn't ask for but knew he had to fight. Did his duty along with hundreds of thousands of others, no special treatment asked for, what we owe them is incalculable.

Living close to Salisbury I've often had the 'pleasure' of playing against squaddies in my football days. Our team had a 'reputation' and enjoyed plenty of tasy matches (and the odd punch up) against squaddie sides. Never had and easy game against 'em but the difference between them and other teams was we that always had a drink and a laugh with them afterward - kicked lumps out of each other on the pitch, shook hands and respect afterwards. You knew you were playing men not boys.

Gonna be at church tomorrow, don't set foot there apart from weddings and funerals, not a religous thing for me, just want to take time out to pay my respects.
