hello mate your car doesnt have a timing belt it has a timeing chain ..it is normally the chain that rattles on start up ..i would get it checked ..try www.z22se.co.uk for more info ...i know it isnt your engine but there a close match and the chain problem is the same ... ...hope this helps benny
It's unlikely to be the timing chain, they're not a known issue on the 2.0T.
What it is most likely to be, given that it's a 2.0T, is one, or a combination, of multi-v belt tensioner and/or alternator pulley - the latter of which was modified so any of these you buy now will be modified. It's such a common problem on the 2.0T that it's more than likely to be that.
There are numerous threads on here about the issue - several by me! lol - just search for multi-v tensioner or alternator pulley and you'll dig up a few threads.
Is the noise a kind of 'twittering' noise when you first start up and it goes away after a minute or so?
