    Default GM in trouble

GM have asked the US goverment for a baillout plan and if unsucesful may go bust early next year.

Ford too are expected to ask for a baillout too economists think a major car firm will go bust by next year.

also they said that a merger between GM and Ford may go ahead if the down turn continues.

I think it's GM and Chrysler that are considering merging.

If GM take Chrysler onboard they will go skint, it's like BMW taking Lada under their wing, well worse actually, at least a Lada starts.

Both GM and Chrysler have several billion in cash, but need most of that to maintain cash flow to run the business; they have been negotiating a merger (read GM take over Chrysler) with Govt support for some months. At the current rate of burn, they will both be belly up by about April, but the US government has promised some aid (protectionism again?) to help preserve business and jobs. For every one Automobile job, there are about 7 other jobs in supporting industries, so a collapse would be catastrophic. Same applies to UK

GM and Ford are still supporting all the retired workers too - back in the big business years both companies gave their workers rediculous pensions. Now that people are living longer GM and Ford find they're paying a lot more folks than are working for them, and not making the big profits they used to.

GM Europe is the only part of the whole group that's making any money.
