    Default Need a little help

Im best man for a friends wedding on the 22nd, just over a 2 weeks away

And I am struggling to write a speech.

Now the rehersal is next week so i know what i'm suppose to be doing at the church etc, but this wont cover the recpetion ans said speeches.

Are there any ex- best men out there who can help?

I just need clarification on a few things and a few pointeres with me speech.

Do I have to introduce the other speakers? and who are they ususally? the groom and his father or the groom and the brides father?

do they give thier speech before me?

Do i read the cards before or after me speech?

And lastly, are there any golden rules of the best man speech and any "DO NOT do's"??

    Thanks in advance,

    Matt

    Thumbs up

    Hi Matt,

I have had the 'pleasure' of being a best man twice......

The best advice I could give based upon my experience and to answer your questions:

    * The Function (assuming it is at a hotel/ similar) should have a manager/ formal speaker who will introduce each stage of the event - ie the bride and groom arrival etc - they should also introduce the toasts. Normally the Bride's Father will go first and Best Man after.

    * I read a few cards at the begining of my speeches (threw in a few spoofs too for laughs. e.g - Dear Mr **** - thankyou for your enquiry regarding married man's beer tax allowance. Unfortunatley this will not be applicable to your circumstances. Signed Local Council. etc etc.

    * The Bridesmaids and ppl who have helped out - could include parents etc can be thanked at any time - dont worry about remembering names - keep it simple and pause to allow their gifts to be handed over (If any).

The Speech - I have completed a great deal of public speeches and presentations with my job. Hand on heart - Best Man's is the most daunting - especially after a few drinks......

Best advice - keep it simple - speak slowly and clearly. Dont try to mix in jokes if you dont feel confident that you can remember the punchlines. I tended to talk about how I met the Groom - maybe a few tales about what you have got up to? I also made sure to compliment the bride and how well suited the couple are together. Some people are good at talking from the heart - some need to read notes. Prepare points on a sheet on the above - practice in the mirror and in front of your wife or colleagues to get used to it. Tip - search the net for some pre prepared speeches and research the bride and groom a bit - through family and other friends for advice and stories that you could use.

Dont leave it to the night before?!!!

    Oh and Good Luck

    rgds, Matt

^^^ That's good advise. I was best man for my Brothers wedding and vice verse so it was more of a case of going for the jugular in a home and away style battle of the **** takes.

I did the spoof cards. They can be very funny if you can hit the right spot. Don't say anything derogatory about the bride. It never goes down well and no don't use that line either.

    Good luck.

edit: Make sure you get the VXR into the speech at some point. At least then the lads will be interested.

Lads, thank you all for you input.

I've think I've got the speech hammered out too.

Ha, yeah SteveL, i may drop a sneaky plug for the sale of the VXR in at the end

    Thanks again.

Try and memorise the speech as much as possible and have a prompt sheet/card to keep you on track, rather than the whole speech written out.

If you read it verbatim you will lose the place if/when you bring in props or there is un-planned banter with the audience. Best of luck
