    Default 1.9 CDTI (120 and 150)

Just want some 1.9 CDTI owners advice here.

My dad has a R reg Vec 'b' 2.0 16v petrol and is thinking about repalcing it with a brand new or nearly new Vec 'c' due to the bargains around. He was considering a diesel until he took his car in for its MOT and a mechanic (none VX) told him to stay well clear of the "Fiat engined 1.9's as they are crap, unrelaible and very uneconomical for a diesel".

Now, my dad hangs on this blokes every word for some reason and now wont even consider a 1.9 CDTI. I know SOME do have problems but just wanted to know what the owners reckon to the "Mechanics" Statemant?

think the 120 is the more reliable of the two engines. But there does seem to be a lot of problems with the 150

I've had 2x 1.9 150's and did have the fuel pump replaced on one of them but that could have been caused by having a tuning box (several actually)

    Otherwise no problems

His thoughts are with a 2.2 direct now, but i will mention to him about the 2.0T (probably doesnt know they do one).......His has done 170K with no faults (bought 6months old) so his next car must be as reliable!!!

What about fuel economy? under steady driving and "sporty" driving?

So you think his statements are a bit harsh?

Very. My first SRi would average around 48mpg overall (measured) and even low 40's around town.
I have the same engine in my new Alfa GT and even though it's brand new and tight it gets mid 40's on a run and high 30's around town (should be a lot better when it's got a few more miles on it)
I don't have a light right boot either

Don't forget the Vectra weighs a ton and a half, I'd say 675 miles out of a tank is pretty good going personally...

If he's buying nearly new he'll have a warranty anyway, and if anything's going to go wrong it'll do it fiarly early on in it's life I'd say. Had mine for 21K miles, now on 79K, not had a single problem with it...

I've had two 150 cdti's. Last one EGR valve went at 33,000 miles but fixed under warranty. Current one has been OK so far but only on 12,000 miles. I get 43 MPG but that's effectively an urban type cycle because I use the back lanes rather than the motorway when I can. The 120 is significantly slower than the 150 but does seem to have less reported problems.

Having said that if I didn't have a 60 mile round trip to work every day I'd buy a 2.0 T (or TBH I'd buy a VXR )
