    Default what dslr ?

after reading with interest the photographer thread earlier, and also findoung out that i have a 6 month backdated payrise coming to me (even though i am off work sick) then i have decided to do a bit more research and take up photography
i will be on a pretty tight budget and really am looking at the beginners basic stuff for the time being, so have been looking at either a nikon d40 (d60 at a push) and the sony alpha a200 (a300 at a push)
which one do you think would be a good starter dslr, and also what other factors should i be looking at? (what specs/setting etc)
had a hold of a canon but didnt feel right so to speak, the other 2 feel a lot better to me (but then what do i know)
thanks guys in advance for all your help and suggestions

All depends on your budget but i highly recommend a Nikon.

Recently bought myself a D70 from THESE guys and both the camera and the seller are and were awesome.

Although the camera was second hand, there wasn't a mark on it, came in the original box with a brand new 2gb memory card, brand new neck strap and all the manuals.

Any DSLR will give far better results than 99% of compacts (don't get hung up on megapixels, I've seen 10ft high prints made from 3mp SLRs in the past), the big guns Canon/Nikon have the best backup of accessories & if you found the Canon too fiddly (I'm not a fan of the EOS 100's range, but the higher spec models are as good as any other) then I'd go for a Nikon

save money and go for 40d as a starter as the body size is good its capable of 6.5 fps and noise is not too bad either at high iso's. as camerman says megapixels dont mean much and sometimes more megapixels can show more inperfections however it does become easier to crop.

Best thing you can do is try friends or in shops first and by that i mean really go through everything. ( not like blokes buying jeans........hold up and say theyll fit) lol

out of the two you have suggested, don't touch the Nikon. Main reason for this is simple, they removed the ability to use "bulb" for timing. Meaning you can only take shots to a maximum of 30 seconds, trust me, this screws some of the best shots you can take at night.

I have the A200, its spot on, picture quality is unreal too:

I love mine. Lenses are super cheap as you can use the old Minolta back catalogue (I have been buying new old stock lenses for peanuts)
Also, image stabilisation is built into the body, making lenses cheaper as you don't need IS lenses.

Feels great in the hand and really easy to use. Oh, and if you can afford it, got to the A350 as the A300 isn't really an upgrade worth doing from the A200.

That is an absolutely cracking picture Karl.

How was that achieved? Your probably gonna say i've got no chance with my D70 aren't you?

I'm quite happy with my Olympus E510. Does my job well enough, and was cheap as chips off Ebay with two lenses.
