Default Vectra 1.9 CDTi (150) - engine rattle

I have just bought thie car from new having had a VW Passat Diesel. The Vectra is very impresive, and also very quiet on the motoway etc. However, around town at low speeds, especially under light acceleartion it sounds like a tractor.

I drove the salesmans car to check, and whilst it too was a little noisy, it was nowhere near as loud as mine. The problem only ocurs once the car is warm. From cold, until it warms up, there is no problem at all.

    Has anyone else noticed this?

Was the salesman's car a higher spec model? If so, it could have had more soundproofing. In my limited experience they get quieter when warmed up, not noisier.
It could of course be an illusion, due to the general quietness of everything else in the car (wind, suspension, tyres)...possibly?

Doug - yes it was higher spec, but I dont think that explains it. The VW was very quiet at all speeds, and that might explain things. However, like you, I would expect the car to be quieter once warm. Not the other way round.

They are a bit rattley at low speed, 1st & 2nd gear. The salesman's car might have more miles on it as well so might be "loosened up" more?

I've got 17000 on mine & it seems quieter over the last 2000 or so.

I test drove a Passat though & it was about the same at low speed, & noisier when on the move.

Thats a part of why I chose the vec.

mines done 8500 miles from new and its deadly quiet when warmed up, to the point when you can hardly here it in the cabin. its a little noisey when cold though (obviously opposite to srcrossley).

Thanks for all your comments. Been out in it again today, and it is definitely worse when warm - only in low gears though around town when accelerating gently. I'm taking it back to the dealer at the end of the week for checking. Its almost as if there is a problem with the fuel mixture/timing - possibly the knock sensor or something.

Let us know if they find anything wrong - it's worth knowing about if it starts to afflict one of us too!

Hope they get it sorted for you.

Had it checked today and apparrently the sound is 'normal'. It happens when you 'take up' speed from a standing start until the turbo kicks in. I have now driven three cars (2 from the garage, and one which was a colleagues hire car) and they do all seem to do it. I think mines worse because I paid for it though!

That said, under normal conditions on the open road, or above 30mph at a constant speed, its as quiet as a mouse.

Update - nature of my job involves around 1000 miles per week. Engine rattle has almost completely gone. Possibly therefore, it is just a case of loosening up, the more miles that you do. Good car, first Vauxhall - and overall very impressed for the price I paid.
