    Default BMW/AUDI..how much better??

Been thinking about trading in my 03 Vec 2.2DTI for a while, its done just over 104000 miles, apart from the very frequent 'limp mode' problem it's still going strong.
If I did trade it in I cant decide what to go for, the choices are:

    1. BMW 320d touring
    2. BMW 330d touring
    3. Audi A4/A6 touring
    4. Signum

I haven't driven the BMW, but I am told they are very refined and a great drivers car. The problem is the prices are still fairly high as they seem to be holding their value even in the downturn.
Typical price for the facelift 320d is around £15k for a 2005/6 SE, the Signum prices are a lot more reasonable.

How much better are the so called 'prestige' cars over VX, are they worth the extra money or is it just the name???

I advise good test drives of the various cars on the type of roads you normally travel, you can't tell until you drive the cars due to differing tastes people have when they recommend a car.

I spent ages testing various models before I settled on mine (170 sport passat) & so far have been very happy with it.

I found a few surprises during the test drives, such as the Lexus is220d, a beautiful car that showed up some quite major "flaws" while driving. I'd have been a bit peeved if I'd found them out after buying the car as I'd already fallen for it before driving one & assumed that would be the car for me.

I also drove an Avensis 180 diesel, which was at least equal to a boxed vec 1.9, it was extremely savage & very fast indeed! The interior was horrible though & the engine was noisy. I couldn't live with that either!

Having just moved from a VW to VX, I can say that the german cars are of a 'better quality'. You do pay a price for it though - purchase price, parts, servicing, insurance etc.

The area where Vauxhall is better - is value for money and spec - you get an awful lot of modern car for your money. And in real terms, its only about 10% behind the germans. ie engine 10% less refined, mechanicals 10% less durable, interior plastics 10% inferior etc

I had the same dilemna - the way i looked at it was: you'd be paying 30% more for something 10% better. Unless you really 'need' the german badge for status/job/driveway reasons ... then the Vauxhall Signum will more than hold its own against the others on the list.

Buy the BMW, in my opinion they are a better car, IF you can afford the extra for one. It won't depreciate AS quickly either

i'd be worried about the resale value of the signum, i went in volvo today and they said starting value was 7k for a 07 signum design 1.9cdti 150bhp with 27k on the clock, i think they was taking the p***.
My misses has just got a new 118d bmw, it drives superbly, infact i only use the siggy for going to work and for towing so i would be tempted with the bmws although i think the A6s are ace.

I'd agree with that. Have had a string of BMW's, most recently a 535d Sport individual. Now doing my 3,500 miles/month in a 57 plate Vec Estate 1.9 SRI which was very keenly priced.

Is there that much difference ? Not really.

    BMW residuals aren't great either.
