Thumbs up Mushy's different day in work!

Had a phone call today from one of my cleints saying one of his test cells for engines had gone off.

The company test all manufacturers engines with new and different turbo rates, boost etc etc.

From time to time turbos explode fuel lines split and it causes a very big fire, we offer protection of all the test cells with C02 suppression systems.

The engine that went on fire is the new saab 93 aero engine which will be running for two years 24hrs a day and all the data supplied to saab ready for the engine to be introduced into the line up.

Oh whilst I was there they are currently running the Audi R8 engine with two whopping great big turbos on!!!

Just thought I would share this info so we all know to what degree manufacturers go before introducing an new engine line up.

Nice, what do they run in place of a gearbox to load the engine up?
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

Dont know all the info but in the top picture the large green housing is a hydraulic controlled gearing setup.

The guys use a laptop and a minidash for rpm control and other stuff.

The industry use dynomometers to apply load, either by converting mechanical power to electrical power (and then either dissipating it or using it - or sell it), using water brakes, eddy current etc.

It all depends on what you are trying to achieve. Water brake and eddy can't 'motor' the engine (ie apply torque to engine) electric dyno's are used for this purpose.

Where is that taken? Is it the old LTC premises?

This looks like a very standard setup, but I can only see one turbo

tbh I am absolutely astounded that they let you in with any sort of camera. You certainly wouldn't be allowed in any of our cells with one

I thought that too. I would be careful posting things like that on a forum.
We had an open day at our place and camera,s and camera phones were banned.
