    Default 120K Service

    Hi All,

I have a 2003 ZC CDX V6, up now for a 120K service. The dealer tells me that the service includes changing the timing belt (is this correct, i didn't think the V6 has a timing belt). And I am getting quoted $1500 for what they consider a major service. Any feedback on the price and the timing belt? I am sure as usual I am getting ripped off here.

oh, and also, is anything likely to break if I don't get this service in the next couple of weeks?

if you work on 120K being 80k Miles in 'old money' then yep, it's the major service..

Yes, the V6 3.2 is a belt driven engine, and it's a biggy..I strongly reccomend the water pump is changed at the same time as it's little extra work as you have to strip in that far again..and for the £40GBP that they are at worst it makes good sense..

The will also be wanting to change the plugs as well at this service, and thats quite a pain to do as well..Add to that the brake fuild change , coolant change and every filter on the car and it's getting to be a big bill..

All i can do at this hour of the morning is relate pricing into GBP for you..

A major service ( without belt and pump) is usually about £280-£300 GPB here if they don't go out of the service schedule and find something else..
A cambelt change with the pump is going to set you back another £190 for parts plus about 2 hours labour, so £180-200.. so a bill off £700+taxes would have to be expected..

If you're anyway mechanically 'handy', or know a good independant Holden specialist you can cut that bill down by up to 1/2..you are well out of Holden warranty by now, so you have nothing to lose getting it done eleswhere..

As for 'is anything likely to break?'.. realistically..no.. but the cambelt is very near the end of it's service life.. I prefer to change them every 60,000 mile/100,000K as when they go they wreck the engine totally..so, you 'could' leave it, but i'd get it done very soon..

Thanks for that comprehensive reply Gsi, sadly, i am still on the dealer extended warranty until feb 2010, so unless i want to void that warranty i am obliged (according to the fine print) to keep getting it serviced at the dealer.

Hi Chaps, I ended up getting this 120K service done (the day before going on holidays), the service included drive belt, pulleys, plugs, filters, replacement of rocker cover gaskets, water pump (thanks for the suggestion GSi). I am pleased to say that the car didn't miss a beat from Sydney to the Gold Coast and back (as well as a testing drive up to lamington national park).

$1500 AUD for 120,000 km sounds about right. This service was priced at $1300 back in 2006 (Commonwealth Motors, Canberra) and there has obviously been some inflation since then.

How much did changing the water pump add to the service cost?

Hi Mate, the water pump cost me nothing as it was covered by my extended warranty, though i reckon it would have been in the region of 4-500 dollars on its own, purely cause i am told by Vectra legend Gsi, that it's in such a awkward position to get to, and it was thanks to his suggestion, that I had it done when I did the service.

Thanks Mr Bond. I am still about two years away from a cam belt change so it will be something for me to consider when the time comes.
