Suggestions for speakers...

Having now fitted the new Alpine CDE-9850Ri to my vectra sri, I'm realising what I was missing with the original headunit! What I do realise now is how laid back the sound of the factory cd units are, so much so that the top mid range is quite prominent on the factory fit speakers though overall I think the sound quality is good for factory speakers. I do though want to feel the bass a bit more, so I am wondering the best way forward without breaking the bank.

Would the best solution be to retain the existing factory speakers in the doors (they are not too bad) and add a sub in the boot? The alpine head unit has preamp outs so it could drive a separate amp and sub, and has independent level control for it. Or... could I accomplish the sound I want by changing the door speaker? I'm also concerned about the so called centre or 7th speaker that's in the centre of the dash. How does this work? If its a single speaker, how do they drive it from both L and R channels on the speaker cables, without affecting the door speakers? Maybe its two in one? Whatever, I might try and disconnect it to see if it helps drop the mid range a bit...

So I am wondering what vectra owners have tried in terms of speakers for the doors, what sounds good and if anyone has achieved a good sound without the need for a sub... or indeed if a sub is the better way to go? In my old cavalier I added a mdf parcel shelf with kenwood 5x7 speakers, that gave me a good bass but also a good sound field in the back.

Trel is the man to speak to. He's got subs and (as far as I know) factory speakers in his Siggy. His subs are made by DLS, which is the make I'd go for if I was upgrading. Prices range from reasonably affordable to "I only wanted speakers, mate, not a whole car!".

i fitted a pioneer unit and when i played with the bass and turned up a tune the back window was vibrating and thats with factory speakers. I am toying with getting some door speakers and 2 subs in the boot powered by an amp but the sensible side of me is yelling STOP MODDING THE CAR so will add to the list for now lol

When i bought my Impreza about 5 years ago, it had a complete DLS install and sounded absolutely stunning... no sub just really top speakers all round
