Default Broadband speed - upload and download

Can someone please explain, in simple terms, the significance of upload and download speeds when doing a speed test, eg.

Not sure what you really what to know? Its the rate at which you can download and upload from the internet. Its useful really for diagnostic purposes to see if you are getting the rate you are paying for.
e.g. if you are paying for 8Mb and only getting 4Mb then I suppose you could get onto your ISP and complain. Although I doubt you'll get anywhere as they do say "up to" 8Mb.

as posted before, see if your getting what you have paid for. and a high down speed means nothing unless your up speed is good. when you click you mouse the signal has to go up first.
also the distance from the ping makes a difference, closer you are better speeds you will get

Besides, in real life there's no website that you can actually download from which will send stuff to you at anywhere near that rate. All it really allows you to do is load pages a little quicker, and do lots of things at the same time (downloading and surfing...) but you'll never find yourself recieving a file at 5mb per second from anywhere...

This is what I get from Karoo ( Hull's very own ISP )

Not too bad for £12.50 a month.
