    Default Car Photography

The deal from the Avon and Somerset Safety Camera Partnership is that they will take two "in motion" photographs of your car for only £30 for each photograph.

I'm reasonably pleased with the results: not bad value for money, considering.

Seriously, folks: drive safely, and never exceed the speed limit, especially not on a bright, dry morning, on a dual carraigeway round a gentle curve with a barrier in the middle, no other traffic around whatsoever, no buildings nearby, no junctions nearby: it would be the height of irresponsibility to be doing 61mph along there in a vxr instead of the posted 50mph limit.

The chairman of the partnership, Assistant Chief Constable Rod Hansen, had this to say:

"It is imperative that drivers recognise that travelling at excess speed is socially unacceptable and presents a danger not only to themselves but also to their passengers, cyclists, pedestrians and others living or working near our roads."

In fact, I was going so fast that I completely failed to see the midget carrying the bowl of fruit across the road.

Did you also get 3 ticks on your licence?

Breaking the 'speed limit' and 'speeding' are 2 different things.

    3 points.
    £60.
    SP30.

    First points in many years.

Not really looking for sympathy, other than I'd like to think that in similar circumstances, a traffic officer might have used "discretion", and issued a warning.
Then again, he might have been having a bad day, or disliked the colour of the car and thrown the book at me.
    Who knows?

If this was safety camera lot it probably wasn't a traffic officer, as such - I don't know for certain but I thought a lot of these were run by "civilian" staff.

It looks to me as if you are in the outside lane - no other traffic?

    Yup. That's my point.

Well, not much traffic. I can't remember exactly, but I think there was a much slower car somewhere behind in lane one which is out-of-shot to the right hand side. By the second shot, I have pulled back into lane one. No traffic in front, anyway.

Yes probably. But cameras are deliberately indiscriminate, whereas a human being can exercise discretion. I was once warned by flashing lights from a car going in the opposite direction to me that a hidden police patrol was in the vicinity (I guessed correctly why he flashed me) and sure enough someone who had passed me had been pulled over. I had been doing 50 in a 40 and he had left me for dead. And I spoke to someone who was pulled on the same stretch, same night for doing 50 and he got a warning. So that implied to me that (probably) 10 miles over on that night on that stretch of road was 'pulling territory'. Trouble is you can never be sure.
