Could it be diesel fumes blowing under or around the car and entering the vents?

Sometimes smells like parrafin or old gloss paint.

Could it be a dodgy exhaust letting fumes in? My flex pipe was broke and that was letting in horrid fumes, changing it and its right as rain. Just a thought!!

When you say 'get out' do you mean from your car? So the smell is outside the car only?

Is it a sort of sweet sickly, acrid smell? If so it is probably unburnt diesel on first start up. I bet it disappears within a few seconds ? Is there an associated 'white smoke' too?

Sounds like you may have dropped a glow plug.

I had a similar smell when a plastic carrier bag got stuck to the exhaust and the dealer scraped it off, as it can take up to 8 weeks to burn off completely.

Both my diesels do it from cold. Maybe it's the cold catalyst letting more grot through?
