we are getting our eldest daughter a telescope as her main xmas pressie, i have found 2 that sound decent but which one sounds the best, i dont understand all the specs stuff, she is big into space and stuff so it needs to be as decent as it can be with a budget of £50.
these are the 2 i have found

I did the same a year or so ago. I think if she really is into 'space' you would want a reflector as in the previous post. Because you are looking at a tiny point in the sky, it moves (well we move really) out of shot very quickly so a motor drive allows you to track the object.

It is a precision instrument so has to be looked after carefully and that then depends on your daughter etc. Also would it lead to frustration if she found it difficult to operate. If not, you really might need to stretch your budget to get anything decent - I think the ones you suggest will work to an extent ie they will make things bigger, but you might be disappointed.

Talk to a specialist shop/supplier - as not all telescopes are good for all things. Astro scopes usually invert the picture so are no good for terrestrial use without a converter.

Reflector telescope....normally shows image upside down, so no use for terrestrial viewing unless you have a image inverter.
Needs to be 4 inch or bigger mirror, ignore hype about magnification, you are more interested in how much light it will pull in...Bigger mirror=more light

More use if it comes with a equatorial mount (allows you to center the axis on the North star so you can then track objects) With these mounts, most now days are motor drive and some of them even come with a kepad that allows you to input corrdinates of objects and teh telescope will then line itself up on them !

Good refractor telescopes are normally more expensives as they they need a bigger lens at the front, they can be used for terrestrial viewing as well as astronomical, they should also have the same mount as the reflector.

One last thing the eye tube on a reflector is mostly on the side where refractors are at the end and can make vertical viewing awkward unless it comes with a converter tube.
