    Default Chime when opening door.

Fix one problem, then another appears.

Seemingly at random when I get out of my car the chime sounds to inform me that the lights are on or the keys are still in the ignition, when the lights are off and the keys are in my hand. These stop after about 11 chimes (sometimes less, but 11 is the most I have counted.

After some investigation, all I can think of is that there is a pin in the ignition that senses when the key is inserted or not and this is not returning correctly. I have given it a shot of WD40 to see if this will fix it, but does anyone else have any other ideas before this drives me mad?

    Thanks

    Trev

Update - the sound is that of the keys being in the ignition, not the lights being on.

I have also noticed that the courtesy light does not come on until the chimes stop so it definitely seems like the ignition barrel is still thinking that the keys are in the ignition when they have been removed.

I have tried WD40 with very little success, do you think Contact Cleaner / Contact Grease would work better?

    Thanks.
Battery has not been disconnected as far as I know but it did have some work done on the windows yesterday so it may have been disconnected then.
Just been out and fully opened all windows (front and back) and then closed them. Same problem. Out of 3 tests the first one registered that the key had been removed after about 5 seconds, second time it worked correctly, third time took about 10 seconds.
    Any other ideas?

Sorted. It turns out there was water getting in on the passenger side of the car and getting into the ECU, that was causing the problem. Have shielded the ECU so shouldn't happen again. I think I've fixed the leak as well, are there any well known leak spots on the passenger side?

    Leak on passenger side.

The only one that springs to mind is the water drain below the cabin filter. You can see it and unblock it where it exits on the bulkhead in the engine compartment. Or lift the flap to gain access to the filter and find the drain in that area.
