Default Digital dslr help and advice please!!

Hi Guys i am looking to upgrade to my 1st proper digital dslr camera and was wondering if this is a good starting camera deal as ther is £100 off and thats with 2 lenses?

    http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/sto...ory_oid=-30405

or would i be better just spending another £30 and going for a canon 40d or something?? any help would be great as ive only ever dabbled and used super zoom bridge cameras up to now Currently i am using a Sony h7 8.1 mp with 15x optical zoom, if i was to go ahead and buy the olympus would i notice a great deal of difference in quality as i think the sony delivers great quality pics
many thanks for your time to help
    cheers
    Scott

Personally I'd go with the Canon (or the equivalent Nikon) if you're going to change. It's a fabulous piece of kit which will give you all the capability and quality you will ever need as an Amateur.

Not sure you'll see much of an improvement to start with but as an analogy I'd say your are using 90% of the capability of your current camera where as with the Canon you'll be using less than 20%.

The improvement will come from you learning and the Canon will wait patiently for you to catch up. Shoot in RAW from the start as you you will end up doing this anyway at some point.

The Olympus is not a big enough jump for me.

You really need to start with a lot of research and/or some hands on personal recommendations. I think you would be struggling to get a 40D for £30 more - the 450 is at least £100 more for body only, and the 40D is more than that. Most are sold as body only although many come as 'kit' bundles.

Have a look through dpreview and try to get some magazine reviews (not just the first impression articles, but the actual reviews). Try Jessops as well, they have plenty of stock, you can handle them and get advice. They have a good returns policy which is almost amounts to a buy it and try it option.

Now, if someone wanted to buy my Nikon D80 I might be tempted by the new D90!

the olympus has had good reviews http://www.reevoo.com/reviews/mpn/ol...FQuY1Qod03MJLg and got 9 out of 10,and user reviews http://www.ciao.co.uk/Reviews/Olympus_E_410__6645024

the nikon d80 gets a slightly lower score, one complaint being the size, the olympus is a bit smaller and probably a lot easier to handle

If you're starting from scratch and think you may get heavier into it, I would look at Canon or Nikon - you'll then have a wider range of lenses and kit available than some of the Olympus, Sony, Pentax models etc as there are more Canon's and Nikon's out there.

Go into a proper camera shop and ask to try them out for size and handling.

For the entry level look at the Canon 400D/450D or Nikon D40/D60

I'm thinking carefully about a Canon 450D but they also do a 1000D which is a similar spec but cheaper.

I believe Jessops have it on offer for £319.

I would get a 2nd hand 30D for £300-£350 body only and then get a 50mm f1.8 prime lens. That would be a bit over budget but a great start. The 50mm prime is a superb lens for portraits and at under £60 it is a real bargain. With Christmas round the corner and santa may bring another lens. You are on a slippery slope.

    Remember glass is everything.
