Apparently they all do that. It's how you change gear...Tee Hee

    Sorry couldn't resist that.

Pull the gater off and have a pooky round underneath. You may be able to see what the problem is a bit clearer. Otherwise me being a numpty I wouldn't know.

anyone else know how to tighten this up as its doing my head in.
i have had a look around and it seems to be wobbling at the ball joint bottom of the gear stick and the gear linkages move with it

The ring surrounding the ball unclips and there should be 2 large o-rings above and below the ball inside the socket,it might be worth checking if they're still intact.

I've got a 2.2 non-direct but the linkage should be same, the o-rings seem to be a cheap way of providing tension to the g/stick so if they've broken up you could get a loose g/stick.To get it apart is simple if you've got flexible fingers!,the cable linkage just pushes off the ball joints on the g/stick, the top of the socket has 3 legs which have to be unclipped then the top lifts off and the g/stick pulls straight out getting it back together is the same but in reverse, the best way to get the linkage together is to reach under the linkage and pull up,pushing down on the g/stick doesn't work,i know i tried for too long!

That metal clip is to adjust the cables, put the g/stick in reverse and that will push in locking the g/stick,the clips you want are part of the plastic socket and are pointing straight down,it's a case of releasing one then pulling upwards slightly whilst you release the others, otherwise they clip in again!,HTH.
