Default Employment / contractual Law specialist !

As some of you may know, I have a fairly long commute to work, 70 miles each way.

As the place where I work finishes early on Fridays (13:30) I am thinking about submitting a request to the powers that be to work from home on this day, as the commute / hours worked ratio is fairly high.

I have spoken to my manager, the Chief Engineer, and have his backing to submit a request.

The question comes down to offering good grounds, as I know that every request has to be considered by the Company. Clearly I need to word the request in such a way as to make a refusal more difficult by the powers that be (the Chief Engineer isn't the decision maker on this)

Does anyone have any good info that could point me in the right direction to make such a request? And any help on suitable grounds to make it more likely to be accepted?

All the infrastructure to support home working is in place at home (ie wireless internet connection, suitable working area can be made available, I have a company mobile telephone etc etc)

    TIA

Do you work to make up the hours in order to finish early on the Friday?
How are you employed - staff or contract (self employed)?

    Staff,

Hours are 8 - 16:30 Mon - Thurs (half hour lunch)
    8 - 13:30 on Friday.

So total week hours are 37, or 37.5 if you ignore Fri lunch 1/2 hour.

this would be my preferable choice, although I work flexi time and work the hours that suit me. My employer if flexible and realise that as long as i complete my workscope its upto me when i do it.

Its about trust working from home, one employer i had would let me work from home but only if i had a package of work to do, my boss and i would agree a qty of work that would take me X hours to do and as long as i completed the work and my timesheet had only X hours for the package of work they didn't mind where it was done.

Part of our justification is that it gives another DR option in case of bad weather, pandemic, asteriod hitting the site etc etc. By doing it regulary you are ensuring that the infrastructure is working properly and able to cope.

I would also mention the environmental benefits, most companies have a travel plan / policy these days to reduce pollution. An alternative would be to work a full Friday every other week, saving you the commute time. Also after everyone else has gone you can do bu66er all or get off early anyway. Do any other employees work from home ? what could you do at home ?

If you dont ask you dont get ...
