hi, ive had 3 cars on lpg - fiat marea 175000 miles, daewoo nubira 85000 miles and my current vectra 1.8 dualfuel 156000 miles, i have never had any problems with the lpg running (touch wood) and as i do about 3000 miles per month it has saved me a fortune, the cost of my fiat conversion was £1500 or so the other cars i bought ready converted, which i think is the best way as when they are sold second hand you dont recoupe the cost of conversion. any questions just ask
andy
I think it depends on how handy you are. You can get Good quality conversion kits for around the £750 mark all in including toroidal tank.
Obviously, installation quality can vary too.
You would need a certificate for around the £50 mark to qualify for lower tax, and for Ins purposes.
The installation is totally do-able if you are fairly handy, the only mental bit is drilling into the manifold to get the gas injectors in without introducing swarf into the power cylinders - best to remove manifold and drill on bench.
I am going to do a LPG conversion on my next year (purchase now deferred a little due to economic climate), I'll do it myself as it will save me £££ and being a competant and fully qualified Engineer I have no worries about my ability to do a good job.
The cost of LPG varies considerably. Effective MPG comparisons take it to around 75 mpg (based on COST) for a duty cycle that normally delivers about 40mpg for petrol. LPG is considerably cheaper than petrol, but you will see about 5-10% reduction in actual fuel economy. This reduction is more than offset by the comparative cost of fuel.
Read up on the subject, Google search will find loads of info.
Minor point and I will probably make myself look like an idiot, but just to make sure - you aren't planning on doing this to a diesel are you mate...?
i was looking to get mine converted till they told me sorry we cant convert Direct Injection engines well gutted haha
Look Here_for_some_info
i have just emailed them as this is a different company if they can convert my direct i will well be getting that done
lots of good advice there peeps. yeh it will be a diesel id be changing. its for my wife and i like the idea of cheaper tax as i jst paid 115 quid for 6 months tax last month. she does 115miles a week. wonder how much of a saving id make and how long it would take to make my money back.
You can LPG diesels no problems, the LPG is used as a catalyst to aid burning. There's a tiny amount of gas introduced into the charge air, which can bring some diesels well over 100mpg if driven right.
115 miles a week = 450 miles a month = 4900 miles a year = roughly 500-600 quid a year in fuel ish.
basically, I wouldn't have thought it was worth doing mate - it would be for the blokes doing 20 - 30K miles a year that it would see any major benefit for...
Those are very rough figures though, but it's a general idea of just how little youa ctually spend on fuel compared to some...
