Smile Recommend Me a Coffee Machine?

This is a serious question - so no from the tea-drinkers please!

My 30th is fast approaching, and I'd like a proper coffee machine. I've had a Philips Senseo for the last couple of years and I'd like to go the next step towards really good coffee.

Problem is, I have no idea what's good, bad, useful or useless and was hoping for some pointers from anyone who has one, wants one or knows anything about them!

From having a very quick look around t'interweb I know roughly what I want if that's any help...

    • Permanent filter - I presume this means not having to buy and change paper filters all the time?
    • I don't want it to make 3 pints at a time, it needs to be 1 cup (or preferably a mug!)
    • No need whatsoever for cappucino frothers, milk steamers or any other poncey features like that - I just want good coffee.
    • Don't necessarily need an integral grinder if that hikes the price - I can either buy ready ground coffee or buy a standalone grinder for not very much money.
    • And a lot of the machine's I've seen are labelled Espresso makers - are they all the same or do Espresso makers only make 2 teaspoons of Espresso at a time? Again, I just want a machine that will make a decent mug of coffee.
    • Price is fairly flexible - I won't be buying it! Obviously I'd like to stay away from the £800 machines though...

    TIA

all depends what sort of coffee you are going to drink really..
the espresso machines are good..but you need one with 15 bar pressure.. to get the full taste out of it.. as for a little amount in an espresso..top it up with water and you have an 'americano' coffee.. this is my favourite type that i like as i aint an espresso drinker either but do like the taste of a good coffee!.. The gaggia machines are very good.. a bit pricey but very good quality and probably one of the best makes around.. there are loads of different ones to choose from but somethin like the cubika model will be good for you or the baby model too which is dearer still!... its all up to you i guess...
the seneo type pod machines are basically the same process as an espresso machine but just topped up with water.. so americano mite be the way forward for you! as for the coffee grinders, you can pick up a cheap enough grinder for around £40, but if you go down the espresso machine route you need a grinder which will grind small enough!

If you want guaranteed good coffee and no messing, look for the Nespresso machines -the coffee comes in capsules, and tastes fantastic. Ours is 6 years old now, and I wouldn't be without it. Otherwise, look for a Gaggia machine. Original and best.
