Default Dell XPS 720 Problems please help

I have a DELL XPS 720 that has decided to stop working

When powered up it just runs the fans, lights and dvd drive..

The front switch is coloured amber, steady not flashing..

Having trawled through many sites they give conflicting answers as to the fault. Some say its the power pack and some say its either the cpu or motherboard..

I have today tried another power pack but that did nothing except click continualy.

So can any techies on here give me any advice as to what it could be

At the moment i am stuck with my laptop and cant do anything other than surf the net....

    hmm,

does the motherboard beep (if so how many times?) . If not, does the motherboard P.O.S.T (power on self test - and beep once?)

When it first happened it just gave 1 beep but nothing else happened.

Now you dont get any beeps just fans running dvd drive opens ok, also there is an orange light on the motherboard thats lit up.

I take it that post is when the pc is first plugged in as it has always run for about 5 seconds then shut down untill you pressed the front switch, but all it does now is as i have said above.

POST happens everytime you turn your PC on, it's controlled by the BIOS which performs a series of quick system checks. If all is well the mobo beeps once and the BIOS hands over to the operating system. You say the DVD and fans are running (power is ok, unless you've changed the power supply, then ur system might be underpowered if you have)

DELL mobos, contain a lot of proprietary widgets, that light could mean almost anything . What about the Operating system itself is it booting? If it's not, then you may have a either a dead HD or a corrupt HD.
