Default Starting problems WITH A DIFFERENCE...HELP!!

So i am very familiar with the notorious starting problem with 2.0dti etc where cars left for a few hours insist on not starting...most likely due to old leak off pipes or worn injector seals...allowing air into the system and causing fuel to drain out of engine back to tank.

Well...my car problems are different...not related to hot or cold starts or for that matter i cant see its related to anything. On occasions, it starts 1st time on my drive, i drive a couple of miles, park up for 10 mins, and when attempting to start the car again..its takes cranking of upto 10-15mins (in 8 second bursts) to get it going...and sometimes it doesnt even wish to start..at which point i hope the bus doesnt take forever to come!!!On some occassions, it doesnt start at all on my drive one day...then the next morning it fires up 1st go!..ITS SO RANDOM!!

Not sure if it helps but i have been parking on a hill facing down the hill and it has possibly helped but im not positive..though that doesnt help once i have parked up in the local supermarket!!

Any suggestions would be much appreciated as this needs to be sorted...i dont enjoy paying the bus driver £3.00 for my bus journey home!!!

thanks for replying as any advice is good..i really need this sorted without pumping cash on random things!

The glow plugs will be fine as sometimes it starts up nice and quick in the cold..and plus once the engine is warmed up for about 10 mins...even crappy glow plugs shouldnt stop the car from starting.
As for fuel issue...possible but why does it fail to start after warmed up and driving...but then might start first time the next morning? STRANGE

Look forward to lots of help

it is certainly a strange one. supose a can of petrol and a match would get it to fire up.

sorry that was bad but u might feel better watching it burn.

My old B had the 2.0 DTI and I had very, very similar starting problems and that was the leak off pipes (even if I'd stopped to fill up, sometimes when I got back in the car it turn over but start etc, completely random as you say)

I replaced them and I never had the problem again.

Have you actually looked at/replaced yours?

Juzzy D...thanks for your reply. I wasnt whether to change the leak offs as the starting poroblem seemed so random....but from what you told me about yours...i might just do that this weekend. I have some pics on this post (link below) of my actual engine....it looks kind of grimey around the pipes so could be leaking.

is it just a matter of pulling them off with brute force and replacing...do the new one need some sort of glue to stick them to the injectors?

    thanks mate

how many miles does your car have mate?
could it be that the throttle body and breather pipes are clogged.
does the dti have butterfly in the throttle body? if so see if its clogged up with cr@p

Hey mate, dont know if this could be related, but my mate used to have a 1.7 TD Astra (yes the older ones), and when it got to the winter months (late October onwards) his car used to do exactly what you are saying: "it takes cranking of upto 10-15mins (in 8 second bursts) to get it going".

In the end, he had a new battery on it, new starter motor, new injectors, new glow plugs and in the end it turned out to be the fact that his engine was losing compression (whatever this means).

Unfortunately for him it meant a new engine.

Once again though, I dont know if the this problem is the same as its 2 completely different engines, but certainly worth exploring if this is the same scenario (winter time, etc).

    HTH.

    Bye bye Vec B

Hi, engine has about 115000 miles on it..is a 52 plate. Im not toooo clued up on tech talk (although i know more then the basics)...but not sure what you mean by butterfly in the throttle body. Nevertheless...i no a mechanic but as he doesnt specialise with vauxhalls....at least i can tell him to look into the possibility of a clogged up throttle body. cheers
