    Default 2.2 Direct Spanner light then dies....help please

    Hi, appologies for the long winded post but I need some help with this one, here goes ;

    My 2004 60k 2.2 direct sri has developed a worrying fault. Over the past two or three weeks the dreaded spanner light has been periodically coming on then going off at ramdom intervals but the car still runs and drives fine......untill about an hour ago when I was coming home from work. The spanner light came on and thirty seconds later the engine just stopped. I coasted to the side of the road and tried to start it again. It cranked over but didn't fire, i must of tried it five times and nothing. Left it 5 mins while I phoned the wife to tell her the good news, tried again and it started. 30 seconds later it died again. I eventually got home after a lot of stop/starts, and the spanner light is on constantly. I sat on the drive with it ticking over, after about two minutes the idle goes a bit lumpy and then it just stops like ive turned the key off. Interstingly, after it cuts out and you try to start it again, it just cranks and cranks but won't fire and I can't hear the fuel pump doings its usual two second prime when you turn on the ignition. Without getting the car to someone with a code reader, is there anything I can do or check? I have generic code reader software and an obd cable for my laptop that will read fault codes for the engine management, but this is way out of its league

    Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated,
    Cheers,
    Simon.

    it could be the popular high pressure fuel pump problem on the 2.2 directs.... either that or one of the sensors...

    it REALLY needs getting on to a higher level diagnostic machine......

    does the fuel pump prime now it's stood a while, as if the fuel rail is up to pressure it won't run anyway.. if it's stood a while then it should need to prime the rail...

    Thanks for the reply, yes it does prime after it's been stood for a few minutes and it will start then. I have read a bit about the high pressure fuel pump and i'm really hoping its not that! What are the symptoms of this pump failing? Do you know if its a job I could tackle myself, I like to think I know my way round an engine bay and i'm not affraid of getting my hands dirty I take it the high pressure fuel pump is that rather expensive looking Siemens device being driven off the cam shaft? Any idea on approximate prices? Sorry to myther...

    The high pressure fuel pump is a £1200 job at the stealers i believe. could be wrong though it might be a bit less.Lets hope it's just your swirl valve eh?Thats what it was with my old 2.2 and it played up just like yours does

    Just been doing a bit more research and the symptoms of a faulty fuel pressure regulator are exactly like mine, about 30 seconds after spanner light, ecu cuts ignition due to lack of fuel pressure.

    If my high pressure pump is ok, can I change just the regulator?

    How difficult of a job is it to change the regulator and high pressure pump? Can I do it on the drive or do I need specialist tools?

    Cheers

    i have a 2.2 sirect SRI 04 plate also and mine used to cut out soon after starting, interestingly enough i had an astra mk4 1.6 that used to bring up the engine light and stall out, turned out to be the EGR valve, dont know if thats any help to you but its only about 35 quid on ebay for a new one or you could try cleaning it as they sometimes get gunked up.

    Thanks for the replys, I've managed to blag a session on my mates code reader tomorrow so hopefully the fault codes it throws up will shed a bit more light! I'm SO hoping its not the high pressure fuel pump, although it looks like a piece of pi55 to change, its still £315+vat from the stealers! Update to follow...
