Default 1.9 CDTI 120PS Cambelt / water pump

Can someone advise me whether a water pump failure could cause the belt to wear excessively, voiding the cambelt warranty?
The problem I had was that the car was overheating and when the technician from the local garage (who are not an authorised repairer) checked it there was smoke coming out from the cambelt area. On opening the cambelt cover it was noticeable that the cambelt had nicks all along it.
The car had a new cambelt kit fitted 11 months ago by an authorised repairer.

if the bearings in the pump wear, it will make the belt track out....but proving it to VX will be very very hard..

Is it possible the bearings have worn out to the point that the water pump has seized and could the friction could have caused to damage the cambelt?

I am assuming that the water pump pulley is driven from the "outside" surface of the cambelt? Or do you think it is possible a tensioner has failed?

Looking at other posts it seems that it is a good idea to replace the water pump when the cambelt is replaced.

Do Vauxhall state a recommended mileage at which to replace the water pump?

I dont think there is a recomended mileage pointed to the waterpump. It should be checked during cambelt replacement. However during the first 150000 km the pumb bearings probably are ok and the technician would not see any cause to replace it. But the pump will definitely not last until the second cambelt replacement. so if you do not have a good ear regarding the noises coming from diesel engine, I would suggest changing the water pump along with cambelt.

as for the cambelt warranty - it applies just to the cambelt kit (belt, rollers and tensioner). If the water pump fails then that pump is the cause for cambelt to wear/break not the belt kit itself hence - not a warranty case.
If the pump would have a valid warranty period and break along with cambelt then the whole repair would be warranty case.

What are the manufacturers warranty conditions in UK? 2 years with unlimited mileage?

All Vauxhall vehicles are covered by a one-year unlimited mileage manufacturer's warranty. An additional second and third year no-fee customer option warranty is also available in the UK. This additional warranty carries a mileage limit of 60,000 miles from first registration for all cars and vans except Vivaro and Movano vans, the additional warranty for which carries a limit of 100,000 miles from first registration.

Thanks for the replies, I have seen articles that suggest that the water pump is prone to failure, is this true in your experience?
