    Default Cailbra Problem

My mate has a Calibra red top that wont start after it has been off road for a few months. Was hoping someone on here might be able to offer some pointers if I explained the problem in detail.

Mods> Does anyone mind me posting it on this forum? If OK where should I post it? lol!

    not quite!

OK, sod it... I'll post the whole thing. Apologies to mods if in wrong place.

My mate has a 93 Calibra redtop (c20xe - i think) and it was playing up start of the year. It would drive fine and then for no reason would start popping and banging and hunting the idle and lose power for about 30 seconds. Then it would clear. So after this started getting worse he took it off road 'cos it was getting dangerous to drive.

He replaced air flow meter, sparks, HT leads and a few other bits in order to try and solve that... then left it for a while. Now if refuses to start. It turns over and over but doesn't take. We realised that it's not getting a spark. So he changed the ignition amplifier (I know this as an EDIS module - but hey) and coil packs. No good. Still wont start.

He's been to a Vx dealer today and they suggested it might be the fuel relay. It is getting fuel (although pressure aint great) - but I don't understand how that cause lack of spark? Personally, I suspect the crankshaft sensor as I believe this provides ignition timing - but not 100% sure on that.

No engine management or ECU light when he turn ignition on.

So there we go... any ideas chaps?

    Many thanks.

my old 2.0 cavvy done same , would run for a bit then chuck it !
this was the fuel relay but it broke down a gain later which was the crank sensor ... this was due to dirty oil !!!
the sensor was down at the front of the engine held by one allen bolt ,
AA guy took it out and cleaned it then new oil and was sweet forever .
hope this is of any help mate.

Relay generally stops it completely, not expensive to replace iirc £20 ish

Sensor does the pop and bang before giving up, then the ecu locks everything out, you could try removing it and wiping it clean before buying a new one.

Yep sounds like the crankshaft sensor. But if you change it, change the camshaft sensor at the same time.

Snowman, you got your ears on?

cheers for your input guys. i think he's getting the fuel relay today so it may sort it... if not it's got to be the crank sensor.
