Default Ignition came off on the end of the key!

About a year ago I was in a bit of a hurry off to a mates wedding up in chesterfield somewhere and I jumped in, put the key in, then realised I needed to go back in the house...turned off the engine but must not have turned the key back far enough before yanking it out :P. Anyway the ignition came out of the the steering wheel and was stuck on the end of the key ... while panicking trying to get the key out the thing exploded and tiny springs went everywhere...ha! Anyway I managed to put some of them back in and its never been a problem since. Just wondered if anyone else has had a similar problem?

I think I would be a bit worried just incase it dropped apart inside and the steering lock engaged whilst driving.
We had problems with the steering lock on my wifes Vectra B. Sometimes you would not be able to turn the key to start the car, it got progresivly worse. So I replaced the "ignition barrel" think it was about £50, better than not being able to start the car and being stranded I thought. I would recomend you changing the ignition barrel on your, just to be on the safe side.

Sounds like you've discovered the secret service procedure for removing the ignition barrel...

The internal lock mechanism only comes apart when you remove the key from the barrel whilst the barrel is out of the lock.

I have had that as an 'extra security feature' since a shoddy Vauxhall dealership c****d up my CIM module repair back in 2006.
