Default Cheaper in the long run to buy a more expensive car?

I'm still thinking about buying a new car, and as I have just got a new job I don't mind spending a bit more than originally planned.

I have been looking around on the internet recently at 07/57 plate Vec C CDTI's which you can pick up for around 7/8K?

I have just seen a lovely BMW 320D on a 05 reg with 38000 miles on it near me for £9.5K

Ok, it's a couple of grand more but I guess in three or four years time it'll be worth more than the Vec when it comes to time to sell it.

What do you reckon? My theory is that over three or four years it could actually cost less to own the Beemer than the Vec. and be a nicer car to own!

the beemer will prob be the base model plus out of warrenty,
where as the vec will have upto 2years warrenty left.
u got a link to the beemer to compare.
it will be worth more than the vec in 3 or 4 years time.
but for me the warrenty wins.

i think over 3 to 4 years cost will come out even.

it will be worth more than the vec but its costing more than the vec
the 320 would cost more to service and parts will be pricey to.
these cars can give trouble like the rest , i didnt think the 320 was as
comfortable to drive as the vec ,take a drive in 1 and mind about the running cost , good luck with your car hunt.

That would be the older model and remember the insurance will be a couple of groups higher. I would try and get into the new shape with a couple of grand more. Remember to get the ones which have the optional indicators. Too many of them now but good cars the old shape, my dad has one with 200k+ now.

I have just come from a 330d and I prefer my Vec. The ride is better and with all the turbo/swirl/MAF problems of the 320d (more common than the Vec problems) the Vec will definately be cheaper in the long run.

Not necessarily, I've seen some new shape 3 series about on a 05 plate.
