    Default Diesel tuning advice please

Looking at getting a vectra 1.9 CDTI 150 or BMW 330d as my next motor. At the moment i am edging more towards the bemmer as it seems a lot quicker on paper.

I have been looking at the DTUK website and their boxes can take the vectra to just under 200bhp and the bemmer to around 220bhp.

Will a stainless steel exhaust system / better air delivery increase the bhp on a diesel car, the same way it does on a petrol?

What bhp figures can i realistically hope to acheive from both engines, and how would this affect the acceleration / drivability on both cars?

    Thanks Tom

I've not driven a 330D but I recently traded in my 530D for a vectra 1.9D. My 530 was remapped by e-maps for an estimated 220 bhp. My vectra has a BSR map for an estimated 184 bhp.

I guess if you expect about 220 bhp for the 330 you are not looking at one of the more recent ones so the engine will be quite similar to my old (E39) one in a lighter body.

You have to realise that you are not comparing like with like here. The Beemer has 50% more cylinder capacity than the Vectra. My 530 would simply leave my new Vectra standing in straight acceleration and would stick to the road while the Vectra had long since understeered into a field. The 330 is faster and (I believe) rather grippier. The surge and smoothness of the BMW 6 has to be experienced to be believed and the ride is streets ahead.

However for the same money you will get a much older or higher-mileage BMW and you can take my word that the repair and maintenance bills do mount up. Also the BMW cabin is much smaller than you'd think - not very comfortable on longer runs with a few passengers. The boot isn't up to much.

So you pays your money and .....
I've swapped for a Vectra and it easily has enough poke for what I want. Try a few and make up your own mind. By the way an auto box on the BMW generally outperforms all but the very slickest manual driver although it hammers the consumption a bit.
