Eek £1300 repair, Can this be right????

I posted a thread here last week about my vectra breaking down:

    http://forum.vectra-c.com/showthread.php?t=58264

After having the car for a week the Vx garage finally got around to looking at it after several visits and daily phone calls . They rang me today and I got a bit of a shock considering the car is a 2005. Below is the email I was sent detailing the problems and how much it will cost to fix, I just wanted to know if the work is necessary (replacing timing belt especially) and if the costs are fair. Any replies and suggestions would be great.

"As discussed see below details of repairs required on car.
Checked for spanner light showing and poor running. Fault codes within car relate to Intake Manifold and EGR valve. Manifold requires replaced and EGR valve requires stripped and cleaned out. Cost for that repair also include the price of a timing belt kit as all this is off during course of repair and it would be good practise to replace at the same time. Intake Manifold and EGR vale cost is £890.

Checked for power steering not working and found alternator not charging. Cost of replacing alternator is £420.

Checked Vauxhall system to see if any recall outstanding relating to either item but none are."

ouch i would speak to vx as they are aware there is a problem with egr valves even though there is no recall... if you argue your ground and use the fact its just out of warrenty by a few months then maybe they'll stint the cost for that least it'll knock a bit off... as for the manifold not sure??? also not sure on alternator, HTH

Thanks for the suggestions Steve, might try them and see what they say, any suggestions who I should contact? No point in going near the local Vx dealers cos they are not the most helpful. Also I bought the car 2nd hand about 2 months ago so that won't help.

Doesn't sound fair to me Huey!!

Sounds like they are trying to recoup some money for time spent diagnosing the cars problems!!!

It's the £420 for the alternator that sounds steep, if not downright vertical!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It took them 1 afternoon to diagnose the problems, the car just sat outside the garage for the other six days til they got time to look at it. I'm gonna have a ring around tommorow and see if there's anywhere in Aberdeen that'll do the work cheaper.

The alternators are expensive on these. There was something on them that fell between set chassis numbers as they did have a habit of failing, although it wasn't a recall as such.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

Do you have a full service history Vx customer services replaced my inlet manifold, DAB radio and automatic gearbox some £5200 for the hardware alone and they paid for the lot and mine was out of warranty, albeit only a few weeks. It will cost you a phone call and even if they only contribute 40% their minimum it will save you a fortune. Give it a try many others have to their credit Vx seem to be fairly good in my experience.
