Default date display on vectra info screen when turning on aftermarket radio?

Since I've fitted my Alpine CDE-9850Ri in the vauxhall vectra sri (53 plate), I notice when I turn on the radio the date at the top of the vauxhall's info display vanishes (as it did with the factory radio to display the radio info), but of course now its blank as the Alpine doesnt interface to the display. Does anyone know how the display knows I'm turning on the radio, and is there a way for the display to retain the date at the top instead of showing blank?

Oh and does anyone know a suitable interface for the steering wheel controls of a 53 plate vectra sri for the alpine head unit? If it exists?

    Thanks
    Simon

That's why I ended up getting a Sony instead of Alpine, was told by car audio dealer that sony & connects 2 box would keep my display working

On the pre facelift vectra c, you will not lose the trip computer as its built into the screen. What I found was that where the normal radio info is displayed (top line of the display), it now goes blank instead of the date when I turn the headunit on.I guess there is a connection from the power antenna lead or similar on the iso connectors that enables this, so I'll disconnect the wire and just have the date at the top of the screen which looks neater. THe trip computer still works fine from the stalk controls.

I am looking at getting a new sony head unit for my vectra (non facelift model), but not sure what cables\adaptors I would need to be able to keep the steering controls and the info screen display.

Can anyone clarify this for me?
    Thanks
