Default Debit card cloned and used

At some point today I managed to simultaneously exist in two other locations, Harrogate and Nigeria.

My bank called to say that some ar$e wipe tried to withdraw funds from my account in Nigeria, but they got the pin wrong so that didn't work - Phew. Then some gob$h*te in Harrogate paid 52 quid for a meal with cloned details. What I don't understand is that the restaurant actually rang NatWest for verification, I'm curious to find out what was 'verified'. Anyway the damage could have been a lot worse, I'm thankful NatWest were on the ball, they'll refund the money and investigate the fraud.

I've got my suspicions, there's a local petrol station that I buy my v-power from, I'm probably wrong but it's the only thing that makes sense at the mo'. The cloning could have happened anywhere...

Happened to me a few years back, they got over £2k worth of goods. That was traced to a filling station

Same thing happened to my wife in june ,when we were on holiday, only used the card once in a shop in Bakewell, did not know anything about it until a new card arrived and she went to activate it it,evident that over £700 was spent in the USA 5 days later, she was asked if she had used it out there, money was re-embursed after a fraud investigation.
Just shows how easy it is,all she can remember that it took longer than usual for the transaction to go through and the shop owners mobile went straight after.all I can say it was an outdoor wear shop in Bakewell.

Sometimes a retailer is requested to contact their merchant provider and obtain authorisation for the transaction

The retailer will be asked for :
    The full card number
    The issue and expiry date
    The name on the card
    The amount of the transaction
    If the customer is present

If the transaction is authorised then the retailer is issued with a transaction code which they enter into the till
Once this payment is received by the merchant they will then compare and ensure that the payment and authorisation code match

This can also happen if the card has been attempted through a till twice, or more, within 60 seconds
As a result your card will be locked, but again if the retailer contacts the merchant provider and confirms the transaction then the lock is automatically removed, and only ONE transaction is processed

I had a call from the Halifax a few days ago about the very same thing - 3 transactions made on my card totalling 2 grand, including 2 from an online shop, overclockers, that I've used several times before.

Interesting as I'm out in the Gulf and have been for over a month...

Got to look into it all when I get back next week...

Not what i need as I was planning on buying a new veccy....

Something similar happened in the petrol station, in fact I re-entered the pin again as it appeared not to register the first time.

If the transaction fails, you MUST remove the card from the chip reader, never enter the PIN number again
Alternatively, make payment by an alternative method, then contact the Credit Card company for the first transaction and ask them to record a failed transaction with that date and time

Never lost a penny and all was sorted with hardly any inconvience to me except them sending me a new card .Think is was a LLoyds TSB Trustcard if I remember

Just watching a repeat of Fonejacker.

I laugh at George phoning asking for bank account number and sort code, but in real life, it's not so funny when some 8u99er tries to get your money.
