    confused Clunking noises?

    Hi there,

I've been having some problems with my Vectra C for a few weeks now and It's becoming quite a headache. I've just replaced the pads as they were very badly worn and needed renewing. Now I hear clunking noises from the rear of the car (driver side rear). This noise is intermittent and can happen when I'm just driving down the road or when I'm going round a corner. We've taken the pads out and checked they are not moving about etc and they seem fine and checked for anything thats loose and can't seem to see anything.

Does anyone have any ideas what this could be?? It's been suggested to see if the trailing arm or anti roll bar needs changing.

    Thanks!

Does it sound like someone hitting the chassis with a small hammer... a "clunk" or "twanging" noise? If so, the two most common causes are anti-roll bar links (not the anti-roll bar itself) or the spring(s) jumping in its seat. Had it until recently on my wife's Signum (from all 4 corners) and had the anti-roll bar links replaced to no avail, so had the "spring seat mod" done which has fixed it. Basically GM came up with the idea of wrapping plastic sleeves around the bottom of the springs to cushion the blow when the spring jumps and hits its seat/pan. There are quite a few threads on it, GSi3.2 is an expert on it if you need further advice. Here's one thread on it:

As said on the other forum matey, arb links, springs or upper arms are common.

If it's coming from the rear.. i'd strongly suspect the top arm's outer bush is shot..it's a common fail point, much like the vectra B's..

Replaced the front drop links today - one's that go from the anti roll bar to the suspension strut. Cost me £23

My dad seems to think the noise was coming more from the front of the car. Going to take it for a run tomorrow and see how it goes, will let you know!

Thanks for all the advice so far!

As Mark says it's a common fault, had mine replaced now feel much better with no noise either

If the clunking still persists, have a look at this area of the car, the rear anti roll bar, crawl under the back of the car, grab hold of the bar and see if you can find movement. Not saying its the answer but worth a try, it worked on mine

    Thanks.

Well, it seems the problem has been sorted. Been over 20 miles in the car today, across various roads at different speeds and had no clunking noises or anything.

    Thanks for all the advice!!
