    Default 5K Part/EX on 56Plate Cdti150 against new car

I know veccies dont hold their prices too well, especially now they have stopped making them and they probably have a load of them to shift, but I was astounded today when I popped into my local dealers to buy a couple of new wiper blades. I got chatting to the sales guy and asked how much they would allow Part/ex on my 150 56 plate (2 yrs old November) in like new condition with 32600 miles on the clock, against a new 1.8 Petrol exclusiv, which they are knocking out for 10,995 with plus pack and metalic paint etc. (on the road price).

He had a good look round the car and commented that I had certainly looked after it, and it looked like new. After going away and chatting with his boss for 10mins. he came back and said I can do you that deal for 6K in effect allowing me 4995 for my car..

I appreciate that the car I chose as the example was at the bottom of the range which reflected the price therefore limited profit for them, but 5K is much worse than even I thought it would fetch...
Certainly another 12 months with this car, I dont think I've taken such a big hit on any other car I've owned. Even said I only had upto the weekend to decide so they could get the new car registered before their quarter ends. Think he's taking the mick.

Dealers want it both ways, I found this out first hand.

If they offer an £17k Vectra for £10K new as a special deal, they will screw the part ex with the same sort of view point.

I looked at trading in the Astra a few weeks ago with the same dealer (Not the one I usually use)

It was against 2 cars, the first was a used SRi Vectra XP2 estate on a 57 plate and was offered £12K for mine.

The second was on a new SRi estate (Non XP) 1.9 150 which they had in the showroom and they offered me £8K against this one.

So Cameron, your Vectra has not depreciated as much as you think, it's the dealer wanting it both ways.

You may well be right, the sales guy mentioned Glasses book, would you know what the actual book price is for my car. ?

The sales guy said I'd be better off having a new car through Motability instead of actually buying as I receive the higher rate disabled motability payment, I think Motability 3yr contract hire is about £160 a month, which includes everything, (45k mile limit over 3 yrs)but of course you never own it. Its never your car, and I think for something like a veccie you have to pay an advance fee of around 2k+ , probably a good deal but I like to own my cars.
Just need to be less of a number plate snob I think..lol

Quite simply I've managed to accrue a little money during my life and I choose to replace my car frequently... stupid I know! I rarely go for the higher range models as I prefer to say have something newer (generally more reliable) but frequent than something more expensive but changed less frequently... I lose a fortune on cars and I know dealers love guys like me, but you can't take it with you.

Got to www.vauxhall.co.uk and click on Owners then value your car.

This uses Glasses as a price guide and will tell you what its worth
Edit just been there and your car is worth £5960 trade in.

Thanks for the link, I did'nt know that was on the VX site, yep your'e right £5960. I notice it doesn't mention which engine ie. 120 or 150, but probably makes no difference, even though it cost me a extra 500. However, its almost 1k more than I was offered the other day, but as another poster stated it also depends on what you are buying.
Obviously selling private is the way to go.

I've had my car exactly 2 years this month and I've worked out I've been losing £270 a month in depreciation, based on recent part ex offers.

Thats a hell of as lot of money to lose, I've never really given it much thought until this week what my motoring costs really were.
I am seriously considering going down the Motability Car route next time, I've just been looking at their list of cars on their website which one can choose from and some are not too bad at all, quite fancy the VW Golf, Mazda 5 and Zafira's, they have quite a good selection though some require a small upfront advance payment.(only a few hundred pounds though and many cars have nil deposit)
No service bills, no insurance to find ( I dont pay road tax anyway) and of course no worries about depreciation... now I know why there's so many blue badges about. That sales guy said that Motability UK are the largest purchaser of new cars in the UK.
Doesn't look a bad deal at all for about £160 a month hire rental. Certainly an option I shall be looking at next time.

My last car was a Zafira which cost me around the same as the Vectra, but I got 8k P/x for that against the veccie.
